BAM Print: custom WooCommerce with a human touch

Buying print isn't always a straightforward checkout. Some customers know exactly what they need and are ready to pay. Others need a quote, help with artwork or confirmation that their printing can arrive before an event.

For BAM Print in Perth, I built a custom WooCommerce solution that makes room for those different situations. The aim was to make online ordering easier while keeping personal service within reach.

If your customers need more flexibility than a standard checkout gives them, talk to me about your website.

Start with what the customer needs

A customer ordering business cards can choose a finish, compare quantities and see the price as they go. They can add more than one print item to an order, including another design or a different product.

That takes care of the straightforward purchase. But a useful ordering system also needs to accommodate the customer who isn't ready with every detail.

The BAM Print flow lets customers:

    • Upload artwork while placing the order.
    • Keep going and send artwork later.
    • Ask for help with changes, setup or a fresh design.
    • Add notes about the job and a requested date.
    • Contact the BAM team about a non-standard requirement.

    Artwork can follow

Not having a print-ready file should not have to end the conversation.

Customers can choose to send their artwork later or ask for a hand. The page explains that artwork needs approval before printing, so continuing an order does not mean an unchecked file goes straight into production.

BAM Print customers can send artwork later, upload it now or ask for help.

The ordering page also gives customers a clear way to contact the team about special sizes, multiple designs or a tight deadline. Online ordering sits alongside the conversation.

Pay now, or confirm the details first

When customers review a priced order, they can choose to proceed to payment, have their artwork checked first or confirm timing before paying.

BAM Print order review offers payment, an artwork check or timing confirmation.

These are practical choices for a print business. Someone with an event coming up may need a delivery discussion before committing. Someone else may already know what they want and prefer to pay immediately.

Requested dates are subject to confirmation. Giving customers a way to explain their deadline helps start that conversation without promising something the team has not checked.

Custom development around BAM's way of working

The customer experience is only part of the job. BAM also needs to manage products, adjust pricing and handle orders as the business changes.

The custom development supports those everyday needs while keeping the public ordering flow straightforward. The team retains control over its products, pricing and jobs.

Why we used custom WooCommerce code

For this project, combining paid add-ons would still have left compromises in the experience we wanted. Custom coding let us build the required behaviour directly and avoid those additional add-on costs.

That does not make custom development the answer to every online shop. Here, it let us connect print choices, artwork, quotes and payment around a specific business process. The value is in how well the complete experience fits, rather than how many features or plugins it contains.

    Online convenience with personal service

The result is a flexible ordering experience: customers can move ahead when they are ready, ask for help when they need it and reach the people doing the work.
